When a dishwasher stops mid cycle, the timing and the display tell the story. Before we open a dishwasher, we ask three questions. The answers narrow the diagnosis before a single panel comes off.

The door switch tells the control board the door is closed. If the latch is worn, the vibration of the wash pump can let the switch open for a fraction of a second. The board reads that as an opened door and pauses. On many models the cycle resumes when you push the door firmly, which is the giveaway. A worn latch is a quick replacement.
Most dishwashers heat the water during the main wash and again before the final rinse. The board waits for a target temperature. If the element has failed or the thermostat cannot confirm the heat, the machine waits, and on many models it eventually gives up and stops. A dishwasher that stalls at the same point every time, roughly midway, often has a heating fault. Dishes that come out wet and cold are the other clue.
Between stages, the dishwasher must pump out the used water. If the drain pump is weak, the filter is packed with food, or the drain hose is kinked, the water level does not drop. Every dishwasher has a float in the tub base and many have a leak sensor in the pan underneath. A float stuck high, or a few drops of water in the base pan, will halt the cycle. The leak sensor trip is a warning worth respecting. It usually means a hose clamp, a pump seal, or a door gasket has begun to weep.
The circulation pump runs for most of the cycle. If its bearings are worn or the impeller is jammed by a piece of glass, the motor draws more current and heats up. Its thermal protector opens, the pump stops, and the cycle stalls. Once it cools, the machine may run again for a while. A dishwasher that hums loudly before it stops is showing this fault.
When the panel goes dark mid cycle and stays dark, the board or its power supply is the suspect. Heat and steam are hard on electronics mounted in the door. A loose harness connector produces the same intermittent symptom. This is the one cause we ask homeowners not to chase, because repeated power cycling can damage a marginal board further.

1. Open the door and confirm the latch clicks firmly and the strike plate is tight.
2. Remove and clean the filter at the bottom of the tub.
3. Check the drain hose behind the machine for kinks and a high loop.
4. Look under the machine for water in the base pan, using a flashlight through the kick panel.
5. Cut power at the breaker for five minutes, then run a short cycle and note where it stops.

Why does my dishwasher stop mid cycle and then start again later?
That pattern usually means a thermal protector is opening and closing. The circulation pump or the drain pump is overheating, cooling, and running again. It will keep worsening until the motor fails, so it is best repaired early.
Can hard water cause a dishwasher to stop partway through?
Indirectly, yes. Calgary's hard water leaves scale on the heating element and inside the pump, which makes both work harder. Scale on the element can also slow heating enough to trigger a timeout on some models.
Is water left in the tub after a stop dangerous?
It is not dangerous, but do not run another cycle on top of it. Scoop or sponge it out, clean the filter, and check the drain hose. If the machine stops again with water inside, the drain pump needs testing.
