What should I do if my stove smells of gas?

Treat an unexplained gas smell as a possible leak. Do not wait indoors to judge how strong it is, search for the source, test a fitting or attempt a repair. Do not light a flame or operate electrical switches. Make the emergency call from outside the building.

Should I call ATCO or an appliance repair company first?

Call ATCO or 911 from outside first when gas can be smelled. Emergency responders assess the immediate hazard. After they confirm it is safe, arrange the appropriate qualified repair service. Gas piping, connectors and appliance components can involve different work and credentials; confirm who is qualified to perform the particular job before authorising it.

Can a gas smell identify the failed part?

No. A smell alone cannot identify an igniter, valve, connector or supply-pipe fault. The timing and location may help a qualified technician investigate after the emergency is resolved, but they are not a reason to keep using the appliance or carry out a leak test yourself.

Once safe, note whether the smell occurred during lighting, during cooking or with the appliance off, and whether a burner had recently gone out. Do not recreate the fault to collect this information.

What information helps with a repair request?

• The appliance brand and full model number, if already available.
• What you noticed before leaving and any instructions given by the emergency responder.
• Whether the appliance has been isolated or must remain unused.
• The service address and a phone number where you can be reached safely.
