A cooktop has fewer parts than a range, and each one carries more of the load. On an electric model, an element, an infinite switch, and a wiring harness do all the work. On gas, it is the valves, the igniters, and the spark module. On induction, it is a power board and a set of coils. When one part weakens, the others compensate for a while. Then they fail too.
Catching the first sign keeps the repair to one part. That is the whole argument for paying attention, and it is why we wrote this post rather than another one about a cooktop that is already dead.
A burner that used to boil a pot in eight minutes and now takes fifteen is losing output. On an electric coil or radiant model, that points to a tired element or a switch whose contacts have pitted. On gas, it is usually blocked burner ports or a low-flame adjustment that has drifted. On induction, a coil or a power board is running in a reduced mode. Glass cooktops light an indicator while the surface is above a safe temperature. If the light stays on for hours, or lights when the cooktop has not been used, the limiter switch under the glass has stuck. The same switch protects the glass from overheating, so a stuck limiter is not only an annoyance. It is a safety part that has stopped doing its job.
Gas cooktops click for a second or two while a burner lights. Clicking that continues after the flame appears, or that starts on its own, means moisture or grease has reached the igniter, or the spark module is failing. A cooktop that clicks with every knob off will eventually fail to light at all, and it is a sign the spark module deserves attention before that day.
Radiant elements cycle on and off by design, but the cycle should be steady. A burner that drops out for long stretches, or that shuts off entirely mid-boil, usually has a weak infinite switch or a failing element. Induction cooktops that shut off may be overheating because the cooling fan under the glass has failed. In both cases the appliance is protecting itself.
A small chip at the edge of a glass cooktop grows with every heating cycle. Liquid that reaches the electronics below can short a board. Cracked glass should take the cooktop out of service until it is replaced. Our post on dealing with a cracked glass cooktop explains why we say that.
Touch controls that need several presses, or knobs that produce heat at the wrong setting, point to a control board or a switch. Moisture is the usual cause on touch models, and worn contacts on knob models. Early on, these faults are intermittent. Left alone, they become permanent and can take the board with them.
A gas smell with the knobs off, or a hot-plastic smell from under an electric cooktop, means stop using the appliance. Burnt wiring at an element terminal is one of the more common findings when we open an electric cooktop that has been "working fine" with a slow burner for months. Is cooktop repair worth it on an older unit?
Usually yes for a single element, switch, or igniter. A cooktop under fifteen years old with one failed part is a good candidate. A cracked glass top on a very old model is the exception, because glass replacement is a larger job.
Can I keep using the other burners while one is faulty?
For a slow burner, yes, as long as there is no smell and no burnt wiring. For a cracked glass top, a gas smell, or a burning smell, no. Those faults can affect the whole appliance.
Why does my induction cooktop shut off after a few minutes?
The most common reason is a failed or blocked cooling fan under the glass. The power board overheats and shuts down to protect itself. Cleaning the intake sometimes helps, but a failed fan needs replacing.
